The Sabena Trophy

The Sabena Trophy was presented to the Sqn in 19XX by Sabena airlines, which flew out of Newcastle airport.

The trophy is presented annually to the "best all around cadet" on the squadron. Sabena went into liquidation in the early part of the new century, but despite this, the Sabena trophy is still presented to the best cadet. Along with the Sabena trophy, other trophies are given out to cadets for various achievements in all aspects of cadet life on the squadron.

The Training Awards are given out on the basis of exam result alone.

There are trophies for all 4 classifications,
Best 1st Class Cadet
Best Leading Cadet
Best Senior Cadet
Best Staff Cadet

Awards for high standards in specific areas are also on offer to all cadets. These trophies are presented to a cadet for putting a high amount of effort into an activity, or excelling in their field.

These trophies are:

Best Marksman
Best Sports Person
Best Bands Person
Best cadet for that year

All the trophies are presented on the Squadrons annual awards evening, named after the airline that presented the original Trophy. The Sabena parade means a lot to all the cadets involved, and is an opportunity for people to be rewarded for their efforts. Sabena is also a showcase to the Cadets parents, giving them a chance to see what we do on the squadron. Displays are put on by our Sqn Band, and various other groups of cadets.

Squadron Staff and NCO Team

The Squadron is run by a dedicated team of staff and Cadet NCO's (non commissioned officers), we currently have 2 commissioned members of staff who are Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Officers, we have a Squadron Warrant Officer and a large selection of Civilian Instructors, many of whom are retired from the Royal Air Force or retired ATC Officers and Warrant Officers.

This depth of knowledge and experience is pooled together to provide the broad range of activities and expertise that 346 is renowned for.

The commanding officer is Flight Lieutenant Will Close-Ash. Will is a school teacher and has been in command of Tynemouth Squadron for over 8 years. In 2005 he received a certificate of meritorious service from Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear for his services to the air training corps.

The Cadet NCO team is made up of cadets from the Squadron who have shown their potential and have been given the opportunity to lead. Promotions are made by the Squadron Commanding Officer up to the rank of Cadet Flight Sergeant, promotion to Cadet Warrant Officer (the highest rank a cadet can reach) is made by the Wing Commander. All cadet NCO's over the age of 18, become "Instructor Cadets", which is shown by Instructor Cadets being appended to their rank slide
