Weekend of fun for Tynemouth Cadets

Air Cadets from Tynemouth Squadron have spent their weekend visiting their local RAF Station.

Over 40 cadets from the Squadron where invited to spend a weekend at RAF Boulmer in Northumberland by ex-cadet Squadron Leader Al Jackson. Al, a local lad from Marden, was keen to show the cadets from his old Squadron what life in the Royal Air Force is all about.

They swapped their blue RAF uniform for greens as they took part in team sports, leadership challenges, visiting different parts of the station and whole host of other activities

One of the highlights of the weekend was a chance to visit 202 Squadron and their search and rescue helicopters. The cadets had a chance to climb inside and see what it's like to be a search and rescue pilot.

For cadet Chris Marshall, 14 from Tynemouth, the best bit of the weekend was visiting the fire section. "I thought it was ace". Chris, a student at Marden High School was back at his desk after the weekend told why the visit was so good. "I really enjoyed climbing all over the fire engine and finding out how it all worked; then we had a chance to use the hose and giving everything a good spraying, it was mint!"

Some of the older cadets used the weekend as chance to find out more about careers in the Royal Air Force. Sergeant Chris Johnston explained, "We don't always get a chance to spend a whole weekend on an RAF station, so it's great to be able to speak to serving airmen and airwoman and find out about what they do." The cadets thanked Squadron Leader Jackson and his team for putting on great weekend.
