Mr Campbell was the guest speaker at the Squadrons annual awards day. He praised the cadets at 346 Squadron for their hard work and enthusiasm over the past year; in particular their rescue of 7 stranded Belgian climbers in the Pyrenees. "You showed great courage and determination to carry out the rescue" He told the cadets that he would mention their exploits next time he was at number 10. "I'm sure that the Prime Minister will be delighted to hear how brave and professional our young people are."Mr Campbell presented a score of trophies to cadets on the Squadron as well as a number of individual awards. Cadet Corporal James Smith received his flying scholarship and pilots wings from Mr Campbell. James, 17 from Tynemouth, was delighted "I was really surprised to receive my certificate and delighted."
Receiving the trophy for cadet of the year was Flight Sergeant Luke Keady. For Luke, 18 from Marden, this was the perfect end to a perfect week. "I found out on Friday that I have been accepted to join the Royal Air Force as an officer and then on Saturday, Mr Campbell presented with the best cadet award, I was thrilled." Squadron commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Will Close-Ash told us why Luke deserved the top prize. "He's worked incredibly hard this balancing the squadron and school examinations. He's a real asset to the squadron and I'm sure that he will achieve his dream of becoming a pilot in the RAF."
